Specialists in pediatric hematology oncology are generally certified in pediatrics before entering their three year fellowship in hematology/oncology.
Certification in pediatric subspecialties is administered by the American Board of Pediatrics and its subboard for pediatric hematology/oncology. The ABP administers the subspecialty certifying examination approximately every two years. More than 75 % of the members of ASPHO are board certified in pediatric hematology/oncology.
Maintenance of certification comprises four component requirements (professional standing, lifelong learning and self assessment, cognitive expertise and performance in practice). Board certified pediatric hematologist/oncologists must recertify regularly, including a secure examination every ten years and other requirements due every five years.
ASPHO supports members in preparing for initial certification as well as for maintenance of certification by offering resources and education programs that are developed in accordance with the defined hematology/oncology content outline. The society also maintains a dialog with the American Board of Pediatrics and informs members of important changes in certification requirements.
