ASPHO's Mission

The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to promoting optimal care of children and adolescents with blood disorders and cancer by advancing research, education, treatment and professional practice.

This site is a forum for communication about the field of pediatric hematology/oncology and ASPHO's programs for its members. It also serves as a source of current peer-reviewed scientific and clinical research and provides links to other related information through the Internet.

ASPHO's History

The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) was initiated in 1974 by those who had a commitment to pediatric hematology/oncology and initially approached the American Society of Pediatrics and the Society for Pediatric Research as sponsors. The first gatherings of those in the emerging subspecialty took place at the "Blood Club," held in conjunction with the annual meetings of the American Society of Pediatrics/Society for Pediatric Research. It was at a Blood Club meeting in 1977 that Carl Pochedly first proposed a society for pediatric hematologists/oncologists. Bill Krivit, a moving force in the early days of the Blood Club, persuaded those in attendance to look ahead and to anticipate the need for a society committed to the welfare of pediatric hematologists/oncologists and the patients and families whom they served.

ASPHO Policy on Diversity

ASPHO values and encourages diverse and inclusive participation within the profession of pediatric hematology/oncology. ASPHO is focused on attracting, developing, and retaining volunteers who reflect the diversity of its membership to play key roles in leading the society. The society seeks to create an atmosphere that encourages varied perspectives and participation on its committees, task forces, and board. ASPHO believes that an open exchange of ideas from diverse perspectives will result in improved decision making and will best serve our members' collective needs and interests and, by extension, those of their patients.

ASPHO therefore charges its nominating committee, committee chairs, and board to strive for balance and diversity in the elected and appointed volunteer work force. It is our collective goal to identify and nurture the future leaders of the organization and to ensure that they represent the wide diversity of career stage, ethnicity, gender, geographic location, institutional size, and race.

ASPHO's board will annually review its progress in this effort.

Governance

The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology's constitution called for three offices: president, vice president/president-elect, and secretary/treasurer. These three, together with the past president, constituted the Board of Trustees. Today, the Board of Trustees includes six directors at large, in addition to the officers of the society. The term of office is two years each for president and vice president, and three years for the secretary/treasurer, with provision for a second term.
